A Great War Memorial Plaque to John Ducklin.
Memorial Plaque – John Ducklin
Condition GVF, at some stage the plaque has been in a frame, two solder marks to the reverse.
Sold with a small photograph of the recipient; a letter from his platoon commander and his wedding certificate.
John Ducklin was born in Felling in 1895. In civilian life he worked as a miner and resided at 42 Lanton St New Herrington.
He married Ruth Huggins on the 9th of June 1914 and the couple moved to Easington Colliery. When the Great War broke out he enlisted and became a member of the 7th Bn the Yorkshire Regiment. He landed in France on the 13th July 1915, later he was promoted to Corporal.
John was sadly killed in action on the 14th of February 1916, he is remembered on the Menin Gate Memorial.
His platoon commander Harold Brearley Coates wrote a letter of condolence to Ruth, which is included with the plaque. Sadly, Coates was killed on the first day of the Somme.
