Fred Helsby was serving as a Private in the 2nd Bn The South Lancashire Regiment when he was awarded the Military Medal for the following action at Nyaungu on the 14th of February 1945;
‘ Pte Helsby was commanding a section on the morning of 14 Feb 45. His Coy has established themselves on the high ground over looking beach 4. In darkness he was ordered to get his section in position on the high ground above this beach.
Whilst carrying out his orders, two japs, appeared moving towards the high ground which he was occupying. Pte Helsby immediately ran down the hill to deal with them, showing complete disregard for his own personal safety, he killed one and came to hand – to – hand fighting with the remaining one and succeeded in taking him prisoner.
Pte. Helsby inspired his comrades by his determination and personal courage and initiative in dealing with these Jap Snipers with complete disregard for his own safety’

His Military medal was announced in the London gazette on the 24th may 1945. It was downgraded form an immediate Distinguished Conduct Medal.

Sadly a week after the action that earned him the MM, Fred was killed in action on the 21st February 1945. He was laid to rest in Taukkyan War Cemetery in Myanmar.
