John Davis was born in Bedminster in 1870, a Labourer by trade he enlisted aged 18 years in 1888.
In 1894 he went AWOL and on his return was imprisoned for 21 days.
On the 4th of November 1899 he was posted to South Africa and took part in the Second Boer War. He was wounded at Colenso on the 21st of February 1900, suffering a slight wound to the buttocks.
He returned from South Africa on the 3rd of December 1901 and was discharged the next day after 13 years and 6 months service. His character was noted as ‘Bad, but a good Soldier’
